Day 202

movie: Corpse Bride
starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter
genre: Drama, Comedy, Romance,
year: 2005
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: A young man who is trying to remember his vows accidentally marries a dead girl. soon, he's trying to get back to his own wedding without hurting the feeling of his new dead bride. Meanwhile, his real betrothed feeling he's run off, has agreed to marry someone else, who's only after her money.

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have teamed up in this cartoon that helps to once again define their gothic subculture status.

I was sort of iffy on this film.
The subject matter, even though done with dark humour and music, isn't really for kids.

what do i think i learned from this film?
What goes around comes around.

Day 201

movie: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Kenneth Branagh
genre: Adventure, Drama
year:2002
format: TV EDIT

plot: Harry returns to school for his second year, even though he's been warned to stay away.  Soon, he's hearing the voice of a ghost who wants his help.  Meanwhile, his classmates are being attacked and turned to stone, and the new dark arts teacher is less then impressive.  The only way to save everyone is to figure out what the ghost wants and to find the hidden chamber under the school.

I was hoping for more Kenneth Branagh, but was disappointed by how little screen time he got.

I really don't have much to say about this movie apart from what I said in my last post about the first one reminding me so much of the old show Worst Witch.

what do i think I learned from this film?
Somethings are meant to stay hidden and locked away.

day 200

movie: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (aka the Sorcerer's Stone)
starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Maggie Smith
genre: Adventure, Fantasy
year: 2001
format: TV EDIT

plot: A young boy learns on his 11th birthday that he is a very important witch.  Soon he finds himself at the world's biggest school for witches, and a bit of a celebrity.

I have to admit, the first time I heard about this whole Harry Potter thing, I right off thought of the old tv show Worst Witch.  It took me a really long time to allow myself to actually start getting into the mythos of the HP world, given the fact I used to love the Worst Witch when I was younger.

The next thing I have to say is, damn the re-titles.  It seems to be a common thing to take British films and give them different titles outside of Britain. They did this all the time with Hammer films.

What can I say about this other then, after the first ten minutes I was just captivated.  I still hold a big comparison though to the Worst Witch stories.  Harry Potter -book-  didn't come out until around 1997, where as WW had been around since the mid 1980's.

what do i think i learned from this film?
There's a little witch in everyone.

RIP- Nora Ephron

I was saddened when I saw the news online today, about the passing of Nora Ephron.  (May 19 1941-June 26 2012)

As one of the biggest names in the business, she had her finger on the pulse of life, creating some of the best movies in the dramatic and romantic comedy genres.

My personal favourites by her are You've Got Mail and Julie/Julia

Day 199

movie: The Incredible Hulk
starring: Edward Norton, Tim Roth
genre: Sci-fi, Action, Drama,
year: 2008
format: TV EDIT

plot: After being exposed to gamma radiation, a scientist goes into hiding. Five years later, there is an accident in the bottle factory where he works, and some of his blood ends up contaminating one of the bottles. This causes his location to be found out, and he ends up back on the run. Soon, he's faced with his inner demons and another solider who now has the same thing happening to him.

What do you want me to say about this one?  It just doesn't work, and I don't think it had anything to do with it being a tv edit either.
There is just something missing in the overall story here.  It gets confusing and feels like it's catering to an inside joke.  Maybe it is?

I loved the old tv show, and there were a few moments when I laughed out loud just because of the cameos, but I felt the biggest downfall of this version of the Hulk stories was the fact the Hulk himself was digital.  This is one time when they really should have stuck to the original idea, and had a second actor to play the 'monster' side.   Much like the Van Helsing film that came out  a few years before, with it's digital version of Hyde (and come on lets call the Incredible Hulk what it is, a very clever version of Jekyll and Hyde) it just took away from the over all creepiness of it and made it laughable.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Sometimes we need to face the inner demon straight on and other times, we need to keep it within.

Day 198

movie: Spider-Man 3
starring: Tobey Maguire, James Franco
genre: Action, Drama, Sci-fi
year: 2007
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: Peter Parker is trying to cope with the fact that someone new is trying to zone in on his job at the paper, and find the time to ask Mary Jane to marry him. Meanwhile, there is the Sandman to deal with, a criminal who can regenerate when near sand or mud, and an alien creature that has bonded with Parker himself.

As always, I got a massive jolt out of the fact that Bruce Campbell had a cameo.

As a fan of the cartoon for years, the character of Venom was always a favourite.

This movie does sort of feel like it's off the track just a bit. There is too much going on in it.  They just tried to cram too much of the series into the time they had.  This would have worked a bit better if they'd done the same thing that both the Harry Potter and Twilight films did, which was break up the ending film into two parts.

what do i think i learned from this film?
We all have a duel nature, it just depends on how far we are willing to go to let each side have it's day.

Sunday, June 24, 2012

Day 197

movie: Spider-Man 2
starring: Tobey Maguire, James Franco
genre: Action, Drama,
year: 2004
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: After struggling to keep a balance between being just Peter Parker and Spiderman, he decides that he will stop being a hero. Soon, a new villain, Doctor Octopus, threatens the life of Mary Jane, forcing Spiderman to return.

Again, we have a small cameo by Bruce Campbell.

We see the element of job related stress being a key plot point.  Once Parker decides that he just can't live two lives, he begins to feel better.

what do i think i learned from this film?
It's about self doubt and finding it within yourself to trust that you are on the right path. It also give permission to take care of yourself.  So many people in this day and age are living lives that do not center around them as much as it does someone they have to look after.  This sort of reminds you that you can't look after someone else if you don't first look after yourself.

Day 196

movie: Spider-Man
starring:  Tobey Maguire, James Franco
genre: Action, Drama, Sci-fi
year: 2002
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: When  Peter Parker gets bitten by a genetically altered spider, he begins to transform with the same abilities that the spider has.  Meanwhile, his mentor and best friend's dad, has had a lab experiment of his own go wrong transforming him into the Green Goblin.

As someone who grew up on Spiderman cartoons, and a television series in the late 1970's, this was something that I couldn't wait for.
I have to say, the casting of Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin, and James Franco as his son Harry; was just perfect. The icing on the cake of course was Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi in their small roles, along with Stan Lee.  ( I love that Stan Lee has made cameos in nearly everything connected to his comics)

Tobey Maguire manages to capture just enough of the averageness of the Parker character without having it come off as too nerdy, even when he's trying to be geeky.  There's a sense that you can really buy him as someone with the ability of a hero.
I have to say, as a wrestling fan I've always felt that having that small plot point was a perfect creation for the character of Spiderman.  The idea that the Lucha Libre style could translate seamlessly into the world of a super-hero, also helps to give credibility to the idea that someone who seems average on the surface could in fact be more courageous when really needed.

I think the reason the character has survived for the last 50 years (originally introduced in 1962) has to do with the fact he is based in that 'what if' reality.  The struggles of Peter Parker are that of the everyday person. Finding his own independence, finding and keeping his dream career, and having that relationship that means everything to him with his ideal girl.
I also think that is why he's been such a popular character with women over the years.  The idea of the knight in shinning armor being the guy next door.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Like the most famous quote from the whole Spiderman universe says 'with great power comes great responsibility',  everyone has the ability to do something great they just have to have the courage to try.  And I can not get out of my mind the connection the whole Spiderman universe has with the world of wrestling. Spiderman to me has always been the ultimate LuchaLibra  wrestler. You have to know when you need to sacrifice for those you love and when to hold on tight.

Day 195

Movie: Batman 2 The Dark Knight
Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger
Genre: Action, Drama, Crime
Year: 2008
Format: Shaw Video On Demand

Plot:  The Joker is hired by the mob bosses to help get revenge on D.A. Harvey Dent.  Soon, Batman finds himself both respecting Dent and being jealous of him for dating his former girlfriend.  After a brutal attack on Dent who has become disfigured - and becomes TwoFace- Batman starts to feel like it's time to pack it in.

This is by far, one of the best Batman films, in either of the series.
I can only imagine that had Heath Ledger lived longer, that they would have brought his character back in other films.
It's also odd that the Joker storyline is not the focus point of the movie as much as the Dent storyline is.

This feels like a midway point.  It has an overall sense of itself that it is only chapter two in a larger story (which of course it is) but with that said, it manages to handle itself as a stand alone film just fine.

What do I think I learned from this film?
This is one of those films that does carry a larger message, which I got as value everything you do.  Never let your deeds go with the idea that they weren't worth anything, because it really is true that one person can make a difference.   Sometimes even when you are not meaning to.
I also got the idea that one of the metaphors was about trying to balance the negative and positive in all we do.  Sort of an idea that everything is in the core neutral.  It's how we react to what has happened around us, be it because of something we've done or what has been done to us; that really puts the stamp on which side of the balance it falls.

Top 5 Werewolf films

Horror has always had a few aces up it's sleeve.  One of which has always been the character of the wolfman.  This is my short list of fav werewolf films.

1.Ginger Snaps
2. American Werewolf in London
3. Wolf
4. Company of Wolves
5. Cursed

Ginger Snaps is top of my list because it is such an original story.
Company of Wolves, when it came out, was such a strange view on fairy tales and some could say it was a Ginger Snaps before there was one.  Just the idea of a young innocent girl having to deal with the pitfalls of growing up into a young woman.

Day 194

movie: Then She Found Me
starring: Colin Firth, Bette Midler
genre: Comedy, Drama
year: 2007
format: TV EDIT

plot: After her adoptive mother dies, April meets her birth mother for the first time. And it comes at the time when she's going through a divorce and a miscarriage.

This is based on a novel.

I thought this might be a good chick flick, but I was wrong.
It just seemed like it was trying too hard to be a big player when it just seemed to me like it was tangled around itself.

There was just something off about Helen Hunt in the lead, playing someone who is roughly a decade younger then her.  I had a difficult time believing her in this role. And I just could not get past that.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Just because you have half the ingredients for a cake doesn't mean you can make it work without the other half. Things happen for a reason when they do, sometimes you just don't see it until it's in your rear view mirror.

Day 193

movie: Tyler Perry's Good Deeds
starring: Tyler Perry, Thandie Newton
genre: Drama
year: 2012
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: A wealthy man who is tired of living his life for his family, helps a homeless woman and her daughter.

It's a typical Tyler Perry film.  The main theme here is always give more then you think you can.  It's just a very typical Tyler Perry film.
And as in a very typical Tyler Perry film, there is that one music montage that you just could do without midway that just seems to be there to fill time.

It's also sort of predictable.  You know who's going to leave who, you know who's going to fall in love with who, and you know that it's going to have an uplifting message.  (am I allowed to say it's a very Christian film? It's almost too sanitary.)

what do i think i learned from this film?
That Tyler Perry really needs to rethink his music montages in every single movie.

Day 192

movie: Vertigo
starring: James Stewart, Kim Novak
genre: Thriller, Crime, Drama,
year: 1958
format: Cineplex Digital

plot: A detective who suffers from an extreme case of fear from heights, is asked to follow the wife of a friend.  Soon, he becomes involved with her and the obsession doesn't stop even after he witnesses her death.

This is actually based on a book.

I love this film, it's one of my favourite Hitchcock films.
It's one of those movies that the first time you see it, you almost wonder if some of the plot was cut out completely? But on your third or fourth watching of this classic movie, you really get the feeling of ... vertigo. I can't pin point if it's just the fact that movies in that era were sometimes missing reels, or if it was cut like that on purpose?
The topic of possession by the ancestor of the Kim Novak character, now a days, would be more of the main focus instead of the theme of madness.

what do i think i learned from this film?
I was taken back by how abusive James Stewart's character becomes as the movie progresses, and his obsessiveness grows.

day 191

movie  Overnight Delivery
starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd
genre Comedy, Romance,
year 1998
format TV EDIT

plot After learning that his girlfriend has been cheating on him, Tripps,  writes a drunken break up letter then has second thoughts after having sent it in the mail.  He ends up going on a road trip with Ivy, a stripper he met at the bar to beat the the mail delivery.

This was a slightly different twist on the typical buddy-romantic comedy.

Here's one of those rare times when finding something on tv pays off.  It's a cute modernish take on when Harry Met Sally but manages to give a few laugh out loud moments.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Fall in love whenever you can, and road trips are the answer to everything.

Day 190

movie: Cruel Intentions
starring: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe
genre: Drama, Romance, Crime, Thriller
year: 1999
format: TV EDIT

plot: A bet between two spoiled siblings leads to the downfall of a small group of people who happen to get in their way. Soon, revenge and sex is all they are thinking about.

This is a remake of the movie Dangerous Liaisons, and is also based on the book

This is one of those movies that just makes you wonder about society in general.  The whole time I was watching this, I kept asking myself why was this considered such a "classic"? ( given it seemed to be the film that really kicked started the careers of the cast.)

It is, ironically, a movie of it's time.  The sets and costumes/wardrobe are stunning and stylishly rich.  But in the same note, the very things in this film that give it an identity to the generation that it belonged to, are the traps that leave it stuck in the generation that it belonged to.  In an odd way a period piece, much like the original novel was in the 18th century.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Power in the wrong hands is more dangerous then anyone would think, and bored teenagers are always the wrong hands.

Thursday, June 14, 2012

day 189

movie: Lucinda's Spell
starring: Jon Jacobs, Christina Fulton
genre: Comedy,
year: 1998
format: online

plot: A coven of witches are battling it out for the chance to mate with a demigod. The only problem is that he's already had a son with one of them years before, who happens to be a prostitute.

This started off making me wonder what sort of movie it was but quickly proved to be a straight up comedy.
There is no questioning why it's considered a bit of a cult classic.  Fulton's ability to turn from comedy to drama on a dime keeps you glued (there is a scene where she is begging to keep her son while her face is covered in face cream making her look like a clown)

I only wish there had been more scenes dealing with magick.

what do I think I learned from this film?
You can't keep a good witch down.

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

day 188

movie: Charlie's Angels
starring: Drew Barrymore, Bill Murray
genre: Comedy, action
year: 2000
format; TV EDIT

plot: Three secret agents have been hired to save a kidnapped ceo and recover the lost files. Soon they find themselves in over their heads when they realize they've been coned.

This is the big screen remake of the old tv show.

There were a few moments where you sort of go it was funny but most of the time it's just a thin plot.
I sort of see why they decided to try the second movie (day 99) but in the long run, you have to wonder why a second film was made after the mess that was this one?

what do i think i learned from this film?
I didn't learn anything from this film other then they should never have made it

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Day 187

movie: Defendor
starring: Woody Harrelson, Sandra Oh,
genre: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Crime
year: 2009
format: Shaw Video on Demand

plot: A man with a mental disability believes he is in fact a superhero named the Defendor as he fights crime in Hamilton Ontario with the help of a young prostitute.

I was surprised by this film.  It could have gone in a very different direction, like many movies that have been based on comics.
But, here's the kicker,  it is not based on a comic.
I think the fact it does not hide the Canadian elements of it helped to make it a bit more interesting.  Way too often you are given a movie with a superhero that is based in New York, and giving this a Canadian setting was just a bit of a nice surprise.

Watching this, I was thinking that there was no other actor who could have pulled this off.  Harrelson manages to make you believe in his character sometimes just with the way he stares off to the side and tilts his head jutting his jaw.  There is something sweet but calculating in the way the character takes the time to think about what it is he needs to say.  The pairing of him with Kat Dennings at first seemed out of place but after a few minutes of the two on screen together, you understand the reasoning for pairing.  The relationship between their characters has you teetering between the vibes of a school ground romance and a brother-sister relationship. Which I thought was a brilliant way to express it.  You`re never really sure if the Harrelson character is capable of seeing the character of Dennings as a grown up would

what do i think i learned from this film?
You never know where you are going to find a hero.

Monday, June 11, 2012

Day 186

movie: Gunless
starring: Paul Gross, Sienna Gullory
genre: Western, Comedy
year: 2010
format: TV EDIT

plot: An American outlaw finds himself across the boarder in Canada, while hiding from the bounty hunter who's been hunting him for years. The biggest transition for him is that the rule against guns.

This was one of those cute movies that only a Canadian would think to make.
It doesn't have much of a storyline but it gets away with the humour and sense of strange honesty.  The majority of the characters aren't as polished as you might like, but for the short time frame of the movie, it works well enough.

There is also a really cool nod to the whole Due South tv show that made Paul Gross famous.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Just because you believe in a way of life, doesn't mean that it's the way you should live your life

Top 5 Male Heartthrobs

Everyone has their ideal when it comes to top actors.  Sometimes we are just drawn to a particular actor because of the way he looks, and this is where it's at today.

1.Johnny Depp
2.Michael Fassbender
3.Tom Hardy
4.Jude Law
5.Ryan Reynolds

I have to add a few bonus men to this list
6. Colin Firth
7. Hugh Grant
8. Ryan Gosling

Okay, so most of these heartthrobs are British, but what can I say, I love British/Irish men.

Day 185

movie: What a Girl Wants
starring: Colin Firth, Amanda Bynes
genre: Comedy,
year: 2003
format: Shaw Video on Demand

plot:  a young girl has dreamed of nothing but finding her father. On her 17th birthday, she flies to London to do so, discovering he's about to be Prime Minister.

This is based on a play and seems to be a remake of a movie from the 1950's

First off, I rented this because Colin Firth was in it. And it seems, that he's unable to break out of the 'Jane Austen' stuff.  His character was named after the child in Sense and Sensibility, and came across very much like Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary.  Add to it, that Anna Chancellor who played opposite him in Pride and Prejudice played opposite him in this in a very similar character.

With that said, this ended up being just another one of those too happy, too sparkly movies from the generation of Disney tv stars. I get that it was a coming of age story, but there seems to be a full generation of actors who's entire career is filled with these cookie cutter films.

what do i think i learned from this film?
The heart wants what the heart wants

Saturday, June 9, 2012

Day 184

movie: Georgia Rule
starring: Jane Fonda, Lindsay Lohan
genre: Drama, Comedy, Romance
year: 2007
format: TV EDIT

plot: A young woman is sent to live with her grandmother the last summer before college because her mother feels shes out of control. What the grandmother learns, is that she's been abused by her step father.

This movie started off with some promise, but got tangled up in itself about a half hour in.
The three generations of women in this film all have a crutch, the grandmother's character leans on her religion, the mother on drinking, and the daughter on sex. None of whom actually deal with their real issues, not even in the end.
The two potential love interests for the Lohan character both use sex as a tool of avoidance by doing just that, avoiding sex both for different reasons.

Again, the version I saw was a TV edit, so I have no idea if the themes were completely the direction originally intended.

what do i think i learned from this film?
In every lie there is a spark of truth.

Friday, June 8, 2012

Day 183

movie: W.E.
starring: Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough
genre: Drama, Historical, Romance
year: 2011
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: A girl becomes obsessed with the story of how King Edward the VIII gave up the throne for the woman he loved back in the 1930's.

This had the potential to be a really great movie, only it ended up being a disappointing mess.

The big issue with this movie is that it doesn't have any sort of collective timeline.  It would have been one thing for it to jump from past to present if those jumps were not sometimes only a few seconds.  It felt more like a music video then movie. In fact, the trailer was cut to a better timeline then the actual film was.

I think I would have started the movie with the ending scene, of the lead character reading the personal letters then had the flash backs connecting it all rather then the flipping and flopping between the past to present.
Also, you're left a bit confused as to wither the present storyline is fiction or based on a true story as well as the past storyline?  I would have liked to have seen something in the end notes or opening credits saying if the stuff that happens in 1998 were based on fact.

what do i think i learned from this film?
History sometimes should be dealt with by a straight up biography. Love should be a gift, it should be  freedom not a prison.

Thursday, June 7, 2012

Day 182

movie: John Carter
starring: taylor kitsch, mark strong
genre: Sci-fi, action, adventure
year: 2012
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: A young officer in the late 1800's is transported to Mars by a magical key.  Soon, he finds himself fighting for the people who live there.

This was based on a series of books.

This film just doesn't fit.  Now, learning that it was based on a series of novels instead of just one, I understand why.  There is a lack of connection with the characters.
So much was done in digital, that many of the main characters are not unique enough to know when they are talking so you get mixed up on who you're suppose to be watching.

what do i think i learned from this film?
I'm not sure I really learned much from this movie.  It reminded much of the tv show Farscape.

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Day 181

movie: A Valentine Carol
starring: Emma Caulfield, Barbara Niven
genre: Comedy, Romance,
year: 2007
format: TV EDIT

plot: A radio talk show host is visited by the ghost of her former boss on the eve of her wedding to help remind her what love really is all about.

This is a made for tv movie.

Okay,  so this is a romantic comedy version of the classic Christmas Carol, and it really isn't that funny. The scenes with the ghostly boss are typical of this type of story and don't deliver the sort of punch you would find in other variations of this theme.

This movie just lacked in anything moving.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Love is what you make it.

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Day 180

movie: Mansfield Park (2007)
starring: Billie Piper, Joseph Beattie
genre: Romance, Drama,
year: 2007
format: DVD

plot: Fanny Price has been sent to live with her rich aunt and uncle, at age 10.  By age 19, she is doing her best to keep her ethics and morals among her spoiled cousins and their lovers.

This is based on the novel by Jane Austen, and is a made for tv movie.

Fanny Price is said to be the one heroine that nobody particularly likes.
When I talked about this story for an all Jane Austen challenge few years ago, I focused on the element of the two most "moral"characters of Fanny and Edmund, being in love and cousins.
It's still an element that sort of makes me cringe. But that's just me and I have to remember that during the time of Jane Austen, it was a common thing to marry a cousin for money reasons.

what did i learn from this film?
Ethics and values are something that can not be bought. Either you have a strong sense of conviction or you do not.

Monday, June 4, 2012

Day 179

movie: Persuasion (2007)
starring: Sally Hawkins, Rupert Penry-Jones,
genre: Drama, Romance,
year: 2007
format: DVD

plot: Anne Elliot was forced to turn down a chance to be married when she was still a teenager, now almost 30, she finds herself face to face with the great love of her life all these years later. Can she hope that Captain Wentworth can forgive her or will she be forced now to marry another man who she can't trust?

This is based on the Jane Austen novel, and is a made for tv movie.

The main themes here are forgiveness and independence.

The character of Anne is viewed as little more then a necessity by many of those around her, taken for granted by them and fairly thought of as unimportant by her family.

There is also the theme of misunderstandings.  Anne believes that Wentworth is so mad that he could never forgive her, but in truth he's just not expressing his feelings the way he thinks he is.
Also, everyone sees his attention to the character of Louisa Musgrove as a sign that he intends to marry her, but that's not the case. Meanwhile, everyone believes that just because Anne's cousin William has decided that she is perfect for him that it's a done deal when in truth Anne is still in love with Wentworth.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Always be clear on your intentions, and never waver. Treat yourself to great company whenever you are able as you never know when you might find yourself alone. Never take yourself for granted no matter how others view you.

Sunday, June 3, 2012

Day 178

movie: Sense and Sensibility
starring: Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant
genre: Romance, Drama
year: 1995
format: DVD

plot: The Dashwoods have been thrown out of their home after the death of their father, and must now move into a small cottage with a cousin they've never met. Soon, two of the sisters find themselves with broken hearts and scandals.

Based on the book by Jane Austen.

I have to admit, this is one movie that I come back to over and over. I think it's a base idea that even though the original book was written nearly 200 years ago, the themes are things we still can identify with. Maybe because of the state the world has gotten with the idea of celebrities and status?

There are a few scenes where the character of Marianne quotes lines from a sonnet by Shakespeare which asks the very core question of this film - is love a fancy or a feeling?

what do i think i learned from this film?
Love true and never be afraid to show your love, wither it be a loud love or a quiet one. There are too many people on this planet who are out for the things that they think they want and will do whatever they have to, to get them even when it means hurting others so you have to be strong enough to handle things. But don't loose who you are to them out of fear or pride.

Day 177

movie: Leap Year
starring: Amy Adams, Matthew Goode
genre: Romance, Comedy
year: 2010
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: A young business woman makes her way to Ireland to ask her long time boyfriend to marry her on leap year just like her grandmother had done, but along the way she meets another man who she starts to fall in love with.

This had the taste of classic comedies. As in the type you would have seen back in the 50's or 60's maybe even in black and white.
Sweet, funny and dare I say a sort of honesty to it.

what do i think i learned from this film
Whenever you have a film where a city girl is in the country you must have at lest one high heel in cow poo scene.   You have to follow your heart, and sometimes your heart knows where you're meant to be long before your brain catches up. And it's not always where you are the most comfortable.

Day 176

movie: Kick Ass
starring: Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy,
year: 2010
format: Shaw Video On Demand

plot: A high school student who reads comics decides he wants to become a superhero, only he finds himself mixed up in a vigilante's war with a major drug lord.

This is based on the comic

This was an interesting bridge between some of the more popular comics, with references to Spiderman and Batman the most.  I would NOT recommend this for anyone under the age of 16. The violence is very extreme (though so are most comics these days)

I have one question... in the movie why doesn't Kick-Ass ever wonder before the big final battle who Red-Mist is?  Just given the car factor.

And every time we saw Kick-Ass in front of his mirror trying on parts of his costume, I could not get the thought out of my head that. that is what wrestlers must go through when they are trying out new gimmicks.

what do i think i learned from this film?
Everyone wants to be a superhero, it's part of who we are as a society. The only thing is very few have the courage or the know how to do so.
